ROAD SAFETY: MANY MORE DRIVERS SHOULD RESPECT HIGHWAY CODE.

The number of road offences have been on a decline according of officers of the road safety task force.

Gendarmerie officers of the road safety task force have attested that a majority of road users are beginning to comply with the prescriptions of the high way code.

The declaration was made in Akak on the Yaounde - Bafia highway during a control surveillance repression road safety campaign.

Colonel Tchoffa Roger, commander of bravo detachment who was supervising the exercise expressed satisfaction with the drop in the number of road offender which currently stands about 50 a day.

The majority of the offenses include overloading, wrongful overtaking, driving above prescribed speeds and non-wearing of safety belts. At the control post at Akak, drivers guilty of over-speeding paid on the spot penalties of 25000 CFA Francs.

Those who could not pay had their vehicles impounded while a case file is established against the concerns and forwarded to court. For those with overloaded passengers or goods, they pay a fine and the extra load is removed, the commander of the Bravo Detachment of the road safety task force explained.

He added that the number of road offences has dropped signaling a positive change in attitude for most commuters.
